What barefoot shoes are really good

February 25, 2019

They look weird, but you can see so-called barefoot shoes more and more often. The reason: Models like the "FiveFingers" from vibram are said to be good for muscles and joints. Even shoes with a rounded sole are currently popular and even at the discount store to have. There are also models to tighten the stomach and buttocks. But what good are such special shoes? What you should know about barefoot shoes and Co.

Barefoot shoes change the foot movement

Experts are convinced: walking barefoot is the healthiest way to go. This is proven, for example, by a Harvard study by Professor Daniel E. Lieberman. Accordingly, barefoot runners occur mainly with the fore or midfoot instead of the heel. "This changes the foot movement, the toes are bent in the repulsive phase of locomotion towards the back of the foot," explains Jan-Peter Goldmann from the Institute of Biomechanics and Orthopedics at the German Sport University Cologne. "That's why barefoot running requires more muscle than walking in shoes," adds the expert.

Gloves for the feet

However, the possibilities of walking barefoot these days are limited. Therefore, there are special shoes, so-called minimal shoes that simulate this for some time. The most extraordinary model is the "FiveFingers": It looks like a glove for the foot and optimally adapts itself to the foot and the ground because of its nylon stretch material. "Because the feet have more freedom of movement due to the flexible material, the muscles on the foot and lower leg become more activated and strengthened," Goldmann explains the effect of the barefoot shoes. But there are also unobtrusive barefoot shoes in normal design, such as the running.

Do not overwhelm your feet

When walking, for a stroll or for sporting activities such as running, yoga, hiking or golfing - barefoot shoes can be worn everywhere. Because of many minimal shoes there are different models depending on the occasion. However, those who wear barefoot shoes for the first time must be careful to get used to the shoes slowly. Because, until tendons, muscles and bones get used to walking barefoot, it can take up to six months. "The fact that you have worn the shoes too long you notice when the lower leg and foot area gets tired," says the running expert.
